Open PhD position on Neuromorphic Intelligence

alternate text
The Institute of Neuroinformatics (INI) at University of Zurich and ETH Zurich invites applications for a PhD student position in the field of "neuromorphic intelligence".
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to enroll in a joint UZH-ETH degree program and conduct cutting-edge research at the intersection of computational neuroscience, signal processing, and neuromorphic circuit design.

Research Focus:

The PhD project will focus on developing and implementing novel learning algorithms for spiking neural networks (SNNs) on mixed-signal neuromorphic hardware. The research will involve:
+ Investigating biologically-inspired learning mechanisms at multiple time scales, such as short-term, long-term, homeostatic and structural plasticity.
+ Designing and implementing local learning rules for online adaptation in spiking neural networks.
+ Collaborating on the implementation of these algorithms on neuromorphic chips with INI colleagues working on topics ranging from experimental neuroscience to biomedical and robotic applications.
+ Exploring the theoretical underpinnings of plasticity and learning in biological neural networks.

Ideal Candidate:

+ Background in computational neuroscience, physics, electrical engineering, or a related field.
+ Experience with analog circuit design and simulation tools.
+ Knowledge of spiking neural networks, spike-based learning, and signal processing.
+ Strong interest in interdisciplinary research and collaboration.

Benefits:

+ Work at a leading research institute in the field of neuromorphic intelligence.
+ Access to state-of-the-art research facilities and resources.
+ Collaborate with experts in neuroscience, machine learning, and neuromorphic engineering.
+ Contribute to the development of next-generation autonomous neuromorphic cognitive systems.

To Apply:

Interested candidates should submit their CV, a motivation letter, and academic transcripts to giacomo (at) ini.uzh.ch
Please include "PhD Application - Neuromorphic Cognitive Systems" in the subject line.

Application Deadline: 20.12.2024

We value diversity in our group and encourage applications from all individuals that have a strong passion for basic research and a desire to make a significant impact in the field of neuromorphic intelligence.
