OECD expenditure on Information Technologies exceeds USD 1 trillion per annum (well in excess of the expenditure on Neurological Health, and nearly half the total OECD expenditure on Health). However, this huge market is focused on the communication, processing and management of information. By contrast, progress toward autonomous intelligent systems capable of real-world interaction has been slow. For example, the flying, navigation, foraging, and communication skills of a honey bee (with a brain of only one hundred thousand neurons) far exceeds the performance of current artificial autonomous systems. Harnessing the principles of biological computation can be expected to have a major impact on the technology market as autonomous intelligence pervades equipment, vehicles, buildings, utilities and clothing. The following projects make some first steps toward applications based on principles of neuroscience:
