Virtual reality neurorehabilitation
The availability of technologies to immerse humans in fully synthetic sensory-motor experiences has opened up new possibilities for conducting experiments to elucidate aspects of brain function and for designing novel training methods. These training methods are particularly needed for patients affected by neurological disorders such as stroke and cerebral palsy, where current rehabilitation methods are struggling to provide consistently meaningful improvements to patient abilities. We are conducting human behavioural, physiological and neuroimaging (fMRI, fNIRS) experiments to determine the neural correlates of virtual reality interactions. The results of these experiments are used to guide the design of new hardware and software for neurorehabilitation systems. These systems are evaluated together with our clinical test partners.
