INI Helps Convene an Animal Communication Workshop at the 58th Annual Meeting of the Societies Linguistica Europaea in Bordeaux, France
PhD students Jacob Ayers and Yuhang Wang, members of Richard Hahnloser’s Songbird group attended the 58th Annual Meeting of the Societies Linguistica Europaea from 26-29th of August 2025 hosted at the Université Bordeaux Montaigne in Bordeaux, France.
Jacob worked with fellow researchers (Alexandra Bosshard (UZH), Mael Leroux (University of Rennes), Remo Nitschke (UZH), and Simon Townsend (UZH)) affiliated with the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Evolving Language consortium to put together a Workshop titled “From Linguistics to Animal Communication and Back” that brought attention to research in animal communication to the more classical linguistics community.
The Workshop included talks from the keynote speaker Phillipe Schlenker (University of Rennes), Zebra Finch vocal development and behavior from common Songbird group collaborators Dina Lipkind (City University of New York) and Maxine Guzzman from Ofer Tchernokovski’s group (Hunter College), and primate communication talks from Alexandra Bosshard (UZH), Melissa Berthet (UZH), and Cédric Girard-Buttoz (University of Lyon).
