On 1 August 2025, the Institute of Neuroinformatics proudly welcomed Prof. Timothée Proix, who joins us as an SNSF Starting Grant awardee for a five-year project titled “From spikes to language: bundling and binding in neural manifolds” with a budget of ~1.78M CHF.

His research will investigate how the brain transforms sounds into words and combines them into meaningful sentences. By analyzing large-scale intracranial recordings of speech and neuronal activity, developing mathematical models of neural dynamics, and leveraging large language models, Prof. Proix aims to uncover the neuronal mechanisms of bundling and binding—two fundamental processes in human language. His work will provide a multilevel model of speech processing, offer new strategies for treating speech disorders, and inspire novel algorithms for low-energy neuromorphic hardware.
